About the Centre

Mission

The Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Disease (CPPFD) is a well-established institute at the University of Alberta, created to lie at the forefont of prion research. By developing profound insight into the biological processes of prions, we hope to achieve significant results in ending the spread of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), and related prion disorders of livestock, wild cervids, and protein folding diseases of humans. To attain this goal, we will define crucial molecular interactions from amongst the myriad of day-to-day chemical events carried out by living cells. A second aspect of our mandate is knowledge dissemination: by virtue of a world-class faculty and multi-disciplinary training environment, we will train a new generation of prion scientists.
