New Clinical Investigator Award

Valerie Sim, MD, FRCPC was awarded a New Clinical Investigator Award from Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions (formerly the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research) in the September 2009 Independent Investigator Award Competition. She is an assistant professor at the University of Alberta and works as both a clinical neurologist and an intramural researcher at the Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases. This award will fund her work focusing on biophysical properties of infectious prion oligomers, including strain differences and the influence of environment and host. She is currently recruiting post-doctoral fellows (please see link under “Job Openings”).

Research Seminar and Video-conference at the Prion Centre

Trent Bjorndahl, Research Associate in the Wishart Lab, presents a research seminar “Conversion studies and ligand screening of the syrian hamster prion protein” as part of the Centre for Prions Research Seminar series. Several other universities and research institutions will join in via video-conference.

Research Days showcase trainees

Congratulations to Asha Amritraj who received the Gordon King Research Award for best poster at the Department of Psychiatry Research Day. Her poster was titled “Localization and signaling of the G protein-sensitive signal transmembrane domain IGF-II/M6P receptor in the rat brain”. Asha is a doctoral student under the supervision of Dr. Satyabrata Kar.

Congratulations to David Vergote who received an award for his poster at the Department of Medicine Research Day. His poster was titled “Delivering genes to CNS neurons: can HIV be of any help”. David is a postdoctoral fellow in the Westaway lab. Other trainees from the Centre for Prions who presented posters at the Research Days for the departments of Medicine and Psychiatry on May 28, 2009 included Agnes Lau from the Westaway lab and Asha Amritraj, Anitha Kodam and Mahua Maulik from the Kar lab.
